Peace

Things were going pretty steady in January and the first half of February then my parents came for a visit. I think somebody pushed the fast forward button when they arrived. From the 14th of February till the 4th of March things seem to have gone in a blur.

Those first six weeks of the year before my parents came I was constantly thinking about what I would do this year, weather I would go home or stay on for another field service. It was very nice to think of the opportunities coming available on the ship, but at the same time I was balancing that with what else I thought God might have in store for me. Many of my friends will be coming back to the ship and going back to Guinea would always be exciting, but I never could get the peace about coming back. One night while sitting in my bed reading I came to the conclusion that it was time to stop struggling with the decision. When God told me that if I followed His call to Mercy Ships He would take care of everything else. Through my time in 2011 when I decided to come to the ship there was a definite peace about the situation. Every step of the way was very natural and without regret. So, at that time I decided that when I leave the ship in May it will be goodbye for now. This wasn't any easy decision. I'm still not sure what to think about leaving my home of 2+ years. My normal, which is actually pretty crazy, is about to change again.

The next question then comes to mind, if not Mercy Ships then where. It shortly crossed my mind to look for a land based clinic in Africa to work in. Maybe The Luke Commission or something like that. My friend Tiffany is volunteering with them and having great experiences. After contemplating that for a while I decided that it's time to be in the United States again. Currently I'm looking for a Conference Center or Retreat/Camp type place to work. Three years ago I had just heard about Mercy Ships and two years ago I wouldn't have ever expected to be managing a small shop that does $750-$1000 in sales every day. I imagine that what I do next will be in the Guest Services/Support Staff/Food Services realm, but I don't want to limit God to that.

In the mean time I'll be finishing up my time here on the ship over the next 8-10 weeks. They're hoping to have the next Sales Manager picked out so that I can hand-over to them and pass on some of my experiences. Leaving my friends here will be very tough and I'm not sure how excited I'll be about that, but I am excited to be traveling between here and home. I'm looking into traveling for a week or two to see some of the parts of Africa that I haven't been able to see over the last 2+ years.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippines 4.4-7

What's Happen'n'

If you would like to keep an eye on what's happening on the ship I have created a group on Facebook that I can share information on. Over the last year this blog has become more personal and less Mercy Ships focused. There will be pictures and updates of what's going on here on my floating home.

Don't be like a cat;

I feel like to write a New Years blog I should know what's going to happen in my life this year, but I don't. I keep on thinking that when I get my head wrapped around everything I will be able to share more with you, but I haven't. Seems like I should know what I'm going to be doing the second half of the year, but I don't.

There are many unknowns for me this year. Will I stay, will I go? Will I head home or find a new abode. Will I go back to cooking or will I stay on this journey of logistics and management?

After finding this quote I feel the necessity to step outside of myself and see what the Lord has planned, because if I try to do anything without Him it will fail. And if I do this all on my own I'm REALLY limiting myself.

I can't imagine anything being more exciting than what 2013 was. Working an exciting job on a crazy ship with awesome friends in two tropical African countries.

This past year I saw over 1,000 people come through from 40 different countries to volunteer in my home. While they were here we served them countless lattes and over 5,000 waffles. On my off time I traveled through 7 different countries. Visiting friends of the past and made more friends to visit in the future. Gave blood for the first time. Spent two weeks straight sailing through the ocean. It has even been a great year for Mercy Ships; making it's first visit to the Republic of Congo and signing the contract to build the world largest non-government hospital ship. Making it Mercy SHIPS again and double the capacity of the organization.

If you're just as interested as me to see what's going to happen, make sure to come by the blog. I'll be happy to share it with you as it happens. Until then I'll be happy just living one day at a time.

Southern Hemisphere Christmas

It's been a very busy month. With something almost every night.

On Christmas Eve Eve I went on a drive with some friends and watched the sunset at the beach. Then got to stand in the waves of the ocean. It was definitely a rememberable evening. Who knows the next time I'll be standing in the ocean so close to Christmas.

This morning started with a pancake breakfast with some friends and then opening the Shop for people to get their last minute items.

Tonight was the culmination of our Advent Services. Since the beginning of the month we have been celebrating God With Us at our community worship services.

The service ended in my favorite Christmas carol, Silent Night. The only difference was that we sang it in eight different languages.

After the service I spent some time with friends and learned the tradition of a Christmas Cracker.

The night ended with passing out Christmas presents in the Africa Mercy style. Which is to go around the ship and leave your friends present in their shoe that they have left in the hallway.

It has been quite a busy day, and it's not even Christmas morning yet. Hopefully the day will be a bit more relaxing.

During the service our speaker talked about Jesus and how He is our Savior. When's the last time you made that personal? He came to save you. To save you from throwing that fit you threw yesterday when you couldn't find a parking spot. He came to save us from our selfish desire to get everything we want for Christmas. He came to save me from from making plans when I don't want to wait for His. Remember that when you're rushing to the next event. He came to save us.

"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."      Luke 2.11

Love is

A few weeks back Kirstie, the Ward Supervisor, gave a very good talk about what love is. She hit the nail on the head when she was talking about our ability to receive love. During the presentation she showed a specially made video made by the Communications Department. I'm proud to say that many in Communications are my friends. Enjoy the video posted below. If you can't see it, you can find it here.... http://youtu.be/E92OZHSlfq8

3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

1 Corinthians 13

If God has called me to do this then he wants me to be alive and not feeling dry. -Kirstie (Ward Supervisor)

Are you receiving the love that he has given, if not we will not be able to do the work that He calls us to.

Is it a ship disease to be extremely willing to give and not so good at receiving love ourselves. We end up going empty and can't give out anymore.

It stems from an unbelief in God as Provider – once we learn that God is our provider, we will be able to give generously, we'll never need to fear lack or fear burning out make us hold back because we will understand that God is our provider.
